general questions

Q: Do I have to own a business for you to build me a web site?

A: Certainly not. We will build personal web sites too e.g. for your wedding, family, club or organisations. (top)

Q: Does my business need to be computer-based in order to have a website? Do I need to know about computers?

A: You don't need to have computers involved in your business in order to have a website. Many companies do filing, invoicing and more without a computer. Creating a website is more about exposing your business to new potential clients and generating new sales. There is no need to overhaul the way your company does business. (top)

Q: I want to put my business online, but I don't know where to start, can you help me?

A: Absolutely! You do not need any online experience at all. WebWare Works Ltd offers free consultation on all services. We help you right from the start! (top)

Q: How long does it typically take to build a site?

A: There are many factors that determine the time required to complete a website, but on average it takes approximately 14 to 30 days for a basic site, or anywhere between 30 and 90 days for a large complex site, from the date we begin the process to your website being posted on the Web. (top)

Q: Can you use my business's existing logo, brochure design, and other materials for my website?

A: Certainly. If your logo and promotional materials are not in electronic format, we can convert them to a format appropriate for your website. We can accept almost any type of file. If your materials are printed, we can scan and convert them to CD-ROM. The WebWare Works designers will help you keep your online image consistent with your existing one. (top)

Q: My company is in the service industry. Will a website help my business?

A: Absolutely! Over 50% of the population who are online from home or the office use their connection to search for (and to conduct research on) businesses that provide services or products. Your service-oriented business can provide samples, references, location, hours of operation and more right away from your website 24 hours / 7 days a week / 365 days a year. (top)

Q: If I already have a site can you help me improve it?

A: Yes. We can usually redesign or freshen up an existing site. Whether your company's website "doesn't look professional", takes too long to load or the navigation is baffling to visitors, we can help. (top)

Q: How do I promote my website?

A: Once your site is up and running it is important to promote and market it so that browsers can find it.

Q: What payment methods do you accept?

A: To be confirmed. (top)

web design questions

Q: Why have a website?

A: Why go to the bother of having a website? Well, your advertising becomes vastly more flexible than, for example, newspaper advertising. A website will be cheaper than most other advertising methods. Changes can be made rapidly - no publication deadlines to worry about. Best of all, your audience is global!

For the cost of placing a display advert in a newspaper or magazine for a month or two, you can have a multi-page, colour , animated website that is easier and quicker to change and update.

Please note that we are not suggesting you abandon your current advertising methods - far from it. Rather, you should see a website as an additional, more flexible medium which can only help to enhance your public profile. (top)

Q: What does 'website maintenance' mean?

A: Website Maintenance refers to changes made to your website after the initial design. Keeping a website up-to-date is essential in having repeat visitors to your site. Updating the site with sales, newsletters, press releases, financial figures and links are all examples of website Maintenance.

If you already have a website but your business does not have the time to take care of keeping the website maintained, we offer daily, weekly, and monthly updates. Contact us to arrange a custom website maintenance contract that suits your company. (top)

Q: What are the crucial factors for a successful website?

A:

Q: What are the steps to owning a website?

A:

  1. A domain name - this will be the registered part of your website address, e.g. mycompany.co.uk.
  2. Hosting - somewhere to put your website so that it is always accessible from the internet.
  3. A website design.

As a one-stop service we can help you with all of the above. (top)

Q: What are the steps involved in starting a web design project?

A:

  1. First of all we will have a number of discussions with you to gain a detailed understanding of your requirements. If applicable, we would offer suggestions regarding best practice. We will provide you with a quote detailing the work we will undertake for you.
  2. After receiving payment or part payment, we will then produce some graphical examples for you to look at, to provoke thoughts and further discussions.
  3. Once you are happy with the proofing design, we will then start work on producing your web site and give you an estimate of how long it will take us to complete. At this stage, if you have chosen to host with us, your chosen domain name will be registered and the web space (including a temporary holding page), FTP and email will be configured on our servers (and any other supplements that you may have requested).
  4. Within the agreed timescales, we will then show you the initial design and make any final changes if necessary.
  5. The completed site will be checked over by us and by you to ensure everything is working. The site will then be made live for the public to view. If you have chosen our search engine submission supplement, we will optimise each of your pages and submit your site to all the search engines to attract visitors.

At all stages of the project, we will keep you updated on progress and aim to keep you 100% satisfied with all the work being done.

If agreed, we will also undertake any maintenance which includes new pages, text or graphic changes and new functionality. Ad-hoc work can also be carried out, as well as monthly and yearly contracts. (top)

Q: How much input do I have?

A: We welcome your input! The more input we receive from you, the better able we will be to satisfy your needs and produce a site that will have the desired look and impact that you need. It's your website, we want it to look the way you want it. We guarantee it! (top)

Q: What preparations does my business have to do to get online?

A: Brochures, logos, photographs, business cards etc. are all great resources to use. For new businesses we will help you get started from scratch. You will have a dedicated person to answer any question during your website project. (top)

web hosting questions

Q: What is a domain name and why do I need one?

A: All computers on the internet have a unique identity number. These numbers are usually long and hard to remember. The internet allows a user-friendly name to be created and used instead of the number. This name is called a domain name.

A domain name is the unique part of a web address. For example, the domain name in our web address www.webwareworks.co.uk is webwareworks.co.uk. This web address is what a user types in to find your site, and since the domain name is registered to you, it ensures that no-one else can use the address.

There are many reasons why it is a good idea to register a domain name. If you have a business, your customers will look for you using your trading name. By registering your name you make it easy for your customers to find you and buy your products and services. Certain search engine computers also give a higher ranking to keywords embedded in domain names. Once registered a name cannot be duplicated. It is yours forever, providing you continue to pay fees to the relevant registration authority. (top)

Q: Can I transfer my existing domain to WebWare Works?

A: Of course. Simply request an account with us requesting to "Transfer Existing Domain". We will need you to provide us with information relating to the domain, and your current providers should be able to supply you with this: Contact email address for the domain, and contact phone number if known; Name and postal address of registered owner of the domain. If you have existing content, we can upload this to your new web space. (top)

Q: What happens if someone else has already registered the domain name I want?

A: If somebody else has already registered the domain name you will not be able to register it, so will have to choose an alternative. (top)

Q: If you register the domain name for me, who owns it?

A: You do - we only register it for you. We will use the address details you gave us to register the domain and you will receive the certificate. We will however control the domain until such point as you ask us to release it to you. There is no charge for releasing a domain name. (top)

Q: How long will I own the domain name for?

A: The domain name will normally be registered for 1 year initially. After this initial period, you will be responsible for domain renewal costs should you wish to keep the domain name. As long as you are hosting with us, we will let you know when your domain name needs to be renewed, and handle the process for you. (top)

Q: What if I want a ".com", ".net" or ".org" domain name instead?

A: If you want a ".com", ".net" or ".org" domain name, we can register it for you. (top)

Q: Can I have more than one domain name pointing to my web space?

A: Yes, you can have more than one domain name pointing to your web space e.g. www.mycompany.co.uk and www.mycompany.org.uk, but you can't have two separate websites. You can, of course, apply for another hosting account. (top)

Q: What happens when my year's hosting runs out?

A: Approximately 1 month before your account is due to expire we will email you an invoice for another year's hosting. If you agree to a contract for a second year you can use one of the payment options provided and continue hosting with us. If you decide to cancel your account with us, please contact us. If you fail to contact us, we will retire your account in two stages: Initially, the account will be suspended on the day after the renewal date; finally, if we still have not heard from you within one month of the renewal date, your account will expire. (top)

Q: What is "bandwidth"?

A: Bandwidth or "Transfer" is the amount of data you can transfer in a given month from your web site - i.e. 5 pages @ 50KB per page = 250KB per visitor x 1000 visitors in a month = 250MB. (top)

Q: What happens if I need more bandwidth than I have on my account?

A: If you need more bandwidth on your account please email us to request extra bandwidth and we will get back to you with costs and recommendations. (top)

Q: Why is bandwidth so expensive?

A: Bandwidth is expensive compared to disk space because of the network infrastructure required to run a web server - the more bandwidth is used, the more it costs. (top)

Q: What are the rules for domain name registration?

A:

Q: What is a POP3 account?

A: You can send and receive email anywhere from any PC, Mac or other device with an Internet connection. If you change service providers, your email address stays the same, keeping you in contact with your friends, family and associates. (top)

Q: How much disk space am I likely to need?

A: Disk space is the amount of storage space you are allocated on our server. The space needed will depend on the type of site. If you have a predominantly text-based site you won't need much space. If you have thousands of images, photos or other large files you will need more. (top)

Q: What happens if I need more disk space?

A: If you need more disk space on your account please email us to request it. This is normally charged at £1 per MB per month. (top)

Q: I have found a web hosting company cheaper than you - what more do you have to offer?

A: You may well find cheaper hosting companies, but the chances are their accounts don't come with the level of support we offer, or the generous disk space and bandwidth allowances. Others have "pop-up" ads that load every time a visitor comes to your site. (top)

Q: My ISP gives me web space and there are many free hosting companies - why would I want to pay for hosting?

A: Buying professional web hosting from WebWare Works gives you many benefits over free services. You get a permanent domain name (website address), e.g. www.mycompany.co.uk, for your website, and complete control over your domain, giving your website a more professional look. You also get to use many web technologies with your account (CGI, PHP etc.) that free accounts can't offer. These technologies allow you to create pages that are generated "on the fly" and use many server side features. You get a generous bandwidth (transfer) allowance and disk space allocation - all at a very reasonable price. (top)

Q: Is there a minimum contract period?

A: No, you may cancel your account anytime you wish. Just contact us at support@webwareworks.co.uk or by telephone to discuss. Please note that no refunds can be given in part or in whole for unused web space or time. (top)

Q: Why don't you offer a 100% uptime guarantee?

A: We only offer a 99.5% uptime guarantee because it is an unavoidable hazard with web hosting that from time to time we will need to install security patches on our systems and servers. This may require our servers to be rebooted etc., which results in short periods of downtime. Some hosts do claim to offer 100% uptime guarantees but you may well find that their systems are insecure as they would be unable to apply patches and fix bugs. (top)

Q: How do I set up my email accounts?

A: As is usual, you will have to set up your preferred email program to read email from your account(s). We can offer assistance with this as necessary. (top)

Q: How do I cancel my web hosting account?

A: To cancel your account, just contact us at support@webwareworks.co.uk or by telephone to discuss. Please note that no refunds can be given in part or in whole for unused web space or time. (top)
